School Districts Waive Pulaski Day Off

    3/1/2010

    By Susie An

    Chicago Public Radio

Chicago Public School students have the day off in honor of Casimir Pulaski, today. But more than half the school districts in Illinois have opted to hold classes during the state sanctioned holiday.

Matt Vanover is with the State Board of Education.

VANOVER: Some people believe that having that day off allows for students to honor the reason that they have that. Others feel that it's more appropriate to have the students in school that day so they can incorporate what the holiday is about into the studies that day.

Previously, school districts had to apply for a waiver through the state board to keep class in session during certain holidays. But a recent change to the law now allows districts to decide whether to take the day off. Schools are required to observe the holiday by teaching students about the honoree.
