Chicago Public Schools has committed to spending millions of dollars for mentoring troubled students. Some women are stepping in with their own mentoring program for young girls.
One hundred mentors. One hundred middle schoolers.
Sandra Finley is with the League of Black Women, the nonprofit spearheading the mentoring effort.
The district sees mentoring as a solution to some of the violence happening among CPS students. Finley agrees.
FINLEY: We couldn't wait on organized government effort. We couldn't wait on money and grants. We couldn't wait on anything. We had to step in now. This is an initiative for peace and prosperity in our schools.
Schools chief Ron Huberman has committed to spending $30 million to target high schools students most at risk of perpetrating or falling victim to violence.
Finley says her group is not charging CPS for the volunteer services. The objectives are to boost the girls' grade point averages and self confidence.
