Daley Says School Closings Are Necessary

    1/20/2010

    By Susie An

    Chicago Public Radio

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says school closings and turnarounds are necessary to improve the city's quality of education. Chicago Public Schools has announced a plan to close, consolidate, or fire staff at 14 schools. Some critics say the measure disrupts students' lives. But Daley takes issue with that.

DALEY: We're trying to rebuild every community school in the city of Chicago, and that's what you have to do. If you don't build community schools that people firmly believe their child can get a quality education there, then we're going to fail as a society. And that is the commitment of rebuilding school after school, and that's what we're doing.

CPS says it will fire the entire staff at five schools. A private organization will run four others. Nine other schools will be shuttered for under-enrollment, poor facilities or lack of performance.

Chicago Talks has a related story on the shrinking number of Local School Councils at newly created schools.
